Housing
Housing is one of the primary reasons behind building the new facility. Because of the new facility we will be able to provide 26 transitional housing units for the men (10’ x 12’) with communal bathrooms. Women will have 12 transitional housing units complete with private bathrooms (12’ x 20’). Both men’s and women’s units will enjoy access to a common activity area and resource lab.
All residents will be required to participate in the work training program, educational programs and the Pay It Forward service club. Each of these and other programs described throughout this email campaign will have expanded resources and opportunities because of the new facility. Below is a more detailed description of some of the enhancements to the work training and education programs.
Work Training
As a critical part of the housing program, the work training that is required of all residents is designed with self-sufficiency as the ultimate goal. Emphasis is placed on marketable job skills, modeling workplace values and expectations and gaining hands-on work experience. In addition to the work opportunities available through Provo City and the Downtown Alliance of Provo, residents will have access to apprentice work with local businesses.
Education
The Chinese proverb goes, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” The FACC’s commitment to education – life education – is essential for the success of our clients. Teaching them how to navigate not only complicated social programs, but how to lead a quality of life not previously enjoyed is what brings about real, lasting change.
During their stay at the FACC, residential clients will participate in rotating educational modules. These are:
- TRP (Totally Responsible Person) workshops – will assist clients to clarify their own sense of meaning and purpose and develop the skills to achieve them through participation in group projects, improved communication skills, personal awareness and observation, and developing effective responses to everyday life experiences and challenges.
- The Galileo Initiative – founded by Hyrum W. Smith, will be adapted to FACC clients and will be used to teach key concepts related to perception and behavioral change and transformation based on the company’s Galileo Reality Model.
- Elevations – a collection of coursework focused on developing life, employment, and social skills. Curriculum will encompass education and self-improvement programs already available in the community and seek out additional initiatives that are tailored to meet client needs.
