Hygiene & Health
Nursing and nutrition students from Brigham Young University presented the following information on nutrition and hygiene as part of the May Resource Training.
Steps to Good Hygiene
Good Oral Care
- Brush teeth at least twice daily
- Floss teeth frequently
Hand Washing
- Wash hands with soap for at least 20 seconds before meals and after using bathroom
- Use lotion
Skin Care
- Bathe frequently (at least twice a week)
- Watch sun exposure
- Use lotion
Foot Care
- Wash feet frequently
- Rotate foot wear
- Change socks regularly
- 100% cotton socks are recommended
Laundry
- Wash clothes at least twice a week (more if necessary)
- Read labels on clothing and follow instructions
- Follow detergent instructions
- Be careful when using bleach and spot removers
Exercise
- Do something you like to do
- Exercise 3 times per week to increase energy and help you sleep
- Regularity is the key!
Nutrition
The three functions of food
- To provide energy (cereals, fats & oils, starchy vegetables, sugars)
- To sustain growth (milk, eggs, meat, peas, beans, nuts)
- To give protection (fruits, vegetables)
Balanced Diet
- Moderation and variety are important
- No single food can provide all the nutrients needed for a healthy body
- 60% of your diet should come from complex carbohydrates
- You should eat 3-5 servings a day of fruits and vegetables
- You should have 2-3 servings of dairy daily
- Meats and proteins are important to a healthy diet
- Fats, oils and sweets should be eaten sparingly
- A cookbook is available to all mentors and mentor clients. It includes recipes and helpful hints.
