Employment Resources

   The topic for the February Resource Training was about employment resources. Representatives from the Marriott Hotel, Department of Workforce Services, and LDS Employment shared information about employment resources in our community.

Provo Marriott Hotel

   Maria Ruis, the Director of Human Resources at the Provo Marriott, shared information on the type of employee that companies are looking for and provided some tips on obtaining employment.

Employment Tips

  • First impressions are important! The interview starts once in walk into the door. The hiring manager usually asks the opinion of the point of contact person.
  • Dress professionally and use appropriate language.
  • Always come alone to turn in an application and to an interview.
  • Do background research on the job you are looking for.
  • Know what the employer expects.
  • Know what you expect from the job and the employer,
  • A good job candidate has:
    • Done their homework.
    • Know what they want in the position.
    • Know who they are and have established some long term goals for their lives.
    • Have an assertive personality.

The Application

  • Employers are looking for a stable employment history.
  • It is important to provide as much information as possible. Be complete and specific.
  • Explain reprimands and terminations.
  • Everyone has a job history. Look at what you have been doing (i.e. raising children, going to school, etc.)

The Interview

  • Be enthusiastic!
  • Have good eye contact.
  • Use appropriate language.
  • Dress professionally.

Department of Workforce Services

   Jan Podaris, a business consultant from the Department of Workforce Services, showed us what was available on the DWS website at www.jobs.utah.gov. Clients can register online at this website for job opportunities. This website also has a lot of other resources for clients that are looking for employment.

   Jan comes to the Coalition every fourth Thursday from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. to help clients register online for employment services. She also provides a list of job opportunities (temporary and unskilled positions) for clients on a weekly basis. These job lists are available at the Coalition reception desk.

LDS Employment

   Mike Patterson, a volunteer with LDS Employment Services, shared some information about the services that the organization offers.

  • The LDS Employment offers many of the same services as Department of Workforce Services as well as additional services.
  • Employment resources are available free of charge.
  • Resources are available to everyone. You do not have to be a member of the LDS church to use these services.
  • Job opportunities are available online at www.ldsjobs.org.
  • The organization offers career counseling and career workshops and videos.
