The topic for the July Resource Training was educational opportunities. Jeri Swalberg from the Center for High School Studies (CHSS) and Chad Erickson from the Mountainland Applied Technology College (MATC) provided information about their educational programs.
The Center for High School Studies (CHSS) provides quality education programs tailored to adults who are lacking a high school diploma or equivalency. Programs include high school completion, GED preparation, adult basic education, dual enrollment, and adult ESOL. The CHSS is a tier one school and is classroom based.
The cost for the programs are $25.00 per term ($15.00 is refundable). There are four terms during the traditional school year with one term during the summer.
For the first time, the CHSS will be offering a GED specific course beginning in September. The course will include 16 hours of instruction and will cost $25.00. The course can be taken over and over again until a student is ready to take the GED test.
The CHSS is funded by Provo School District and is located at 243 East 2320 North, Provo. The phone number is 374-4840. Office Hours are Monday - Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Mountainland Applied Technology College (MATC) is an applied technology college providing educational classes and programs for high school students, and underemployed or unemployed adults. The college is comprehensive based with an open entry open exit policy.
The MATC currently offers two associate degrees in Information Technology and Medical Assisting, and has over 90 self-paced classes available in a variety of subjects including basic office skills, computer software, accounting, automotive, commercial driving, dental assisting, and biotechnology.
There is no cost for high school aged students. The average cost for adults is about $1.00 per classroom hour. Currently, the MATC does not accept traditional financial aid, but has received financial aid approval for 2004.
